Understanding ABKC registration and papers
By Nathan Gilmore, January 25, 2022
When you buy an American Bully puppy, you will often hear about ABKC papers. These documents prove your puppy’s ancestry and are the key to showing, breeding and registering offspring. Understanding what they are and how to check them protects you from buying a puppy that is not what it is claimed to be. This guide explains what ABKC registration means and what to look for.
The American Bully Kennel Club, or ABKC, is the main registry for the American Bully breed. It maintains a pedigree database, sets show standards and hosts events where dogs are judged and earn titles. A dog registered with the ABKC has documented parents and a recorded lineage, which lets you see the bloodlines behind it. Registration does not guarantee quality by itself, but it shows the breeding is documented and open to review.
A puppy’s registration usually begins with a litter registration filed by the breeder, followed by individual registration in the new owner’s name. The paperwork lists the sire, the dam, the birth date, the breeder and the puppy’s identifying details. Depending on the arrangement, it may also indicate whether the puppy is sold with full registration or a limited registration. Ask your breeder exactly what you will receive and when.
Check the details carefully. The names of the sire and dam on the paperwork should match the dogs the breeder showed you. Look at the pedigree and ask the breeder to explain the notable dogs in the first few generations, including champions and grand champions. If something does not add up, ask for clarification before paying. You can also verify pedigree information through ABKC resources.
Understand the difference between pet and breeding rights. Some puppies are sold with pet-home terms, meaning you agree not to breed the dog, while others are sold with breeding rights that let you register offspring. Breeding-rights puppies usually cost more. Be sure the terms are written down, along with any spay or neuter requirements or return clauses, so nobody is confused later.
Titles matter for showing. Champions and grand champions earn their titles by winning at ABKC-sanctioned shows. If you plan to show, having titled parents can be a good sign of the structure and temperament you are hoping for. A pedigree full of champions does not guarantee your puppy will be one, but it improves the odds, which is why we build our pairings from proven champion bloodlines.
Keep your papers safe once you have them. You will need them to transfer ownership, enter shows or register a litter, and they matter if you ever sell the dog. Make copies and store the originals somewhere secure. All of our puppies are sold with ABKC papers, along with vet vaccinations and a health certificate.
