Pocket, Standard, Classic, XL: American Bully sizes explained

One of the first questions new buyers ask is which size of American Bully to choose. The breed comes in several classes, and the differences go beyond a few inches. Understanding them helps you pick a dog that fits your home, your lifestyle and your goals, whether that is a family companion or a show dog. This guide explains the classes recognized by the American Bully Kennel Club, or ABKC, and what to think about before you decide.
The ABKC divides American Bullies into classes mostly by height at maturity, measured at the withers, which is the highest point of the shoulders. The Pocket class is the shortest, with males measuring up to about seventeen inches and females up to about sixteen inches. Standard males run from about seventeen to twenty inches, and females from sixteen to nineteen inches. The XL class is the tallest, with males above twenty inches and up to about twenty-three, and females above nineteen inches. Always check the current standards, since clubs can update them.
The Pocket American Bully is compact and low to the ground, with a wide chest and heavy bone for its size. Pocket bullies are popular with people who want the classic bully look in a smaller frame. They are often a good fit for apartments and smaller yards, although they still need daily exercise. Because they are stocky, they can be more sensitive to heat, so climate control and short walks in warm weather matter, especially in Florida.
The Standard class is the most common and is considered the classic all-around bully. Standards are taller than Pockets and carry substantial muscle with a balanced, athletic look. They suit families who want a strong companion with good energy for walks, play and outdoor activity. Standards usually have enough leg to move freely without losing the wide, powerful chest that defines the breed. Many show winners come from this class.
The Classic class has a similar height range to Standard but a lighter, leaner build, closer to the original bully type. Classic bullies are less bulky and tend to be more agile. They are a good option if you love the breed’s temperament but prefer a dog with a slimmer, more athletic frame. Many breeders and owners like Classics because they can be a little easier to manage in hot weather and on the joints.
The XL class is the tallest and heaviest, and these dogs make a bold impression. An XL still has to show balance and a strong, well-proportioned structure to succeed. They need more space, more food and stronger training, since a dog of this size pulling on a leash or jumping up can be a lot for a small child or beginner. They are typically gentle giants, but you should be ready for the higher cost of food, vet care and equipment.
Size does not decide temperament. Personality comes from breeding, socialization and how the dog is raised, so you can find calm, friendly dogs in every class. Structure and health matter more than the label, so look for straight legs, a strong topline, clear eyes and a confident attitude. Ask the breeder about the parents’ sizes, since they give a clue to how your puppy will grow, though growth can vary between litters.
