What to ask a breeder before you buy a bully puppy

Buying an American Bully puppy is a big decision, and the breeder you choose matters as much as the puppy. A responsible breeder is open, patient and glad to answer your questions, while a poor one may dodge them. Before you send a deposit, take time to ask the right questions. This guide covers the most important ones and explains what a good answer sounds like, so you can buy with confidence and avoid costly surprises later.
Ask to see the parents. The sire and dam tell you a lot about what your puppy will grow into, including size, structure and temperament. If you cannot visit in person, ask for recent photos, videos and pedigrees. Check that the breeder owns the parents or has a clear relationship with the stud owner. A breeder who will not show you the parents, or shows only photos of other dogs, is a warning sign.
Ask about registration. Puppies should come with papers from the American Bully Kennel Club, which document the pedigree. Ask whether the sire and dam are registered and whether the names on the papers match the dogs you are shown. Also ask how and when you will receive the papers and what rights they carry, since some puppies are sold for pet homes only while others include breeding rights.
Ask about health. Find out whether the parents have been health-tested and what testing was done. Ask what vaccinations and deworming the puppies have received and when, and whether they have been checked by a vet. A trustworthy breeder can show records and provides a health certificate. Ask what the guarantee covers, how long it lasts and what happens if a serious problem appears, and make sure you get the terms in writing.
Ask about bloodlines and the goal of the breeding. Good breeders can explain why they paired two dogs and what they hope to improve, whether that is structure, muscle tone or temperament. Ask which champion lines are behind the pedigree. Ask about how the puppies are raised. Puppies raised in a home with people, sounds and gentle handling generally grow into more confident adults than puppies kept in a kennel with little contact. Ask about feeding, socialization and early training, and what age the puppies go home. Puppies should stay with their mother until they are weaned and ready, usually at eight weeks or more.
Ask about price, deposits and shipping. Get the total price in writing, find out what the deposit is, whether it can be transferred, and when the balance is due. Ask what is included, such as papers, vaccinations, a health certificate and any starter supplies. If you are buying from out of state, ask how delivery works and what it costs so there are no surprises.
Finally, trust your instincts and ask about support after the sale. A good breeder stays in touch, answers questions and takes an interest in how the puppy does.
