French Bulldog Puppies in Florida: What Should I Know Before I Buy?
French Bulldogs are one of the most popular breeds in America, and it is easy to see why. They are funny, affectionate and fit into almost any home. But Frenchies also have special needs, especially in a hot state like Florida. Here is what to know before you buy a French Bulldog puppy.
Why people love French Bulldogs
- Size: adults usually weigh under 28 pounds, so they fit apartments and small homes.
- Personality: playful, loving and often a little stubborn in a charming way.
- Low exercise needs: short walks and play are usually enough.
- Quiet: most Frenchies are not heavy barkers.
- Great companions: they do well with families, singles and seniors.
How much does a French Bulldog puppy cost?
French Bulldogs are expensive to breed responsibly. Litters are small, and many Frenchies need help to breed and deliver. At NMG Bullies, our French Bulldog puppies have recently been listed around $5,000 to $6,000, depending on the puppy and the litter. See current puppies and prices on our French Bulldog Puppies page.
As with any breed, be very careful with prices that seem too good to be true. French Bulldogs are one of the most common breeds used in online puppy scams. Read our guide on how to choose a reputable breeder.
Frenchie health: what to know
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, which means they have a short, flat face. That gives them their famous look, but it also means:
Breathing
Frenchies can have narrow nostrils and airways. Watch for loud breathing, heavy snoring or getting tired quickly on walks. Talk to your vet if you notice these signs.
Heat sensitivity
Flat-faced dogs cannot cool themselves as well as other dogs. In Florida, this is the most important thing to understand. More on this below.
Skin and folds
Clean the skin folds on their face a few times a week and keep them dry.
Back and joints
Keep your Frenchie at a healthy weight and avoid lots of jumping off furniture.
Pet insurance
Many Frenchie owners choose pet insurance to help with unexpected vet costs.
Keeping a Frenchie safe in the Florida heat
Florida summers can be dangerous for Frenchies. Follow these rules:
- Walk only in the early morning or evening.
- Keep walks short when it is hot and humid.
- Keep your Frenchie inside with air conditioning during the hottest hours.
- Always have fresh water available.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
- Learn the signs of heat stroke: heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, wobbling or collapse. Get to a vet immediately if you see them.

Frenchies and water
Most French Bulldogs cannot swim well because of their heavy front and short face. If you have a pool, fence it and use a dog life jacket whenever your Frenchie is near the water.
Training a French Bulldog
Frenchies are smart but can be stubborn. Keep training sessions short, fun and full of treats. Start potty training on day one. Our potty training guide works for Frenchies too.
What to look for in a French Bulldog breeder
- Puppies come with AKC papers
- Vet vaccinations and a health certificate
- You can see the parents
- Puppies go home at 8 weeks or older
- The breeder answers questions about health
Is a French Bulldog right for you?
A Frenchie may be a great fit if you:
- Want a small, affectionate dog that loves to be close to you
- Live in an apartment or a home without a big yard
- Can keep your dog inside with A/C during Florida summers
- Are ready for some extra health care costs over the dog's life
A Frenchie may not be the best fit if you want a running partner or a dog that can spend long hours outside in the heat.
Frenchie vs. American Bully
Both are loving family dogs. Frenchies are smaller and more heat-sensitive. American Bullies are bigger, more muscular and a little more active. Read our American Bully family dog guide to compare.
