ABKC, American Bully, Registration -

What Is the ABKC and Why Do American Bully Papers Matter?

When you shop for an American Bully, you will see the letters ABKC everywhere. Breeders list "ABKC papers," studs carry titles like "ABKC CH," and buyers ask if a puppy is registered. Here is what the ABKC is, what papers really prove, and why they matter for your puppy.

What is the ABKC?

The ABKC is the American Bully Kennel Club. It was founded in 2004 as the main registry for the American Bully breed. The ABKC keeps pedigree records, writes the breed standard, and runs dog shows across the country where bullies compete for titles.

Other registries, like the UKC, also recognize the American Bully, but the ABKC is the registry most bully breeders and buyers use.

What do ABKC papers prove?

Registration papers are a record of your dog's family tree. They show:

  • Your puppy's registered name and number
  • The sire (father) and dam (mother)
  • The pedigree going back several generations
  • The breeder and owner

In short, papers show that your puppy comes from the parents the breeder says it does. That matters because so much of a puppy's future, from size to structure to temperament, comes from its bloodline.

What papers do not prove

Papers are a family record, not a health test or a quality guarantee. A registered dog can still be poorly bred. That is why you should look at papers together with the parents, the breeder's reputation and the puppy's vet records.

Why papers matter when you buy a puppy

You can confirm the bloodline

Bloodlines like Razorsedge and other well-known lines are a big reason buyers choose one breeder over another. Papers let you confirm that the bloodline in the ad is real.

You can show your dog

To compete in ABKC shows, your dog needs to be registered. Many owners who never planned to show end up loving the show community.

You keep your breeding options open

If you ever want to breed, both dogs need to be registered for the litter to be registered. Unregistered puppies are much harder to place with buyers.

Resale and rehoming are easier

If life changes and your dog needs a new home, a registered dog with known parents is much easier to place responsibly.

What does "CH" or "GRCH" mean?

These are show titles earned at ABKC events. "CH" means Champion, and "GRCH" means Grand Champion. A dog earns these titles by winning against other dogs in its class. Our featured stud, ABKC CH Homicide, is an ABKC Champion. You can learn more about him on our Available Studs page.

Champion parents do not guarantee a champion puppy, but they show that the dogs in the pedigree were judged against the breed standard and did well.

How to read a pedigree

A pedigree is a chart of your puppy's ancestors. The father's side is usually on top and the mother's side on the bottom. Look for:

  • Titles like CH or GRCH in front of names
  • Recognized bloodlines
  • Repeated names, which can show line breeding

If you are not sure what you are looking at, ask the breeder to walk you through it. A good breeder will be happy to.

How to register your new puppy

When you buy a registered puppy, the breeder gives you the paperwork you need. In most cases you fill in your details and submit it to the ABKC to transfer the puppy into your name. Do this soon after you bring your puppy home so you do not forget.

Red flags with papers

  • "Papers available for an extra fee." Some sellers charge more for papers. Ask up front exactly what is included.
  • Papers from unknown registries. Some registries will register almost any dog. Ask which registry and look it up.
  • "Papers coming later" with no clear date. Get details in writing.
  • No information on the parents. If the breeder cannot name the sire and dam, walk away.

Frequently asked questions about ABKC papers

Is an ABKC-registered dog the same as an AKC dog?
No. The AKC (American Kennel Club) does not register the American Bully. American Bullies are registered with the ABKC, and some with the UKC. French Bulldogs, on the other hand, are registered with the AKC.

Can I register a puppy if the parents are not registered?
In general, no. For a litter to be registered, both parents need to be registered with the same registry.

Do papers make a puppy more expensive?
Registered puppies from known bloodlines usually cost more than unregistered puppies, because you are paying for a documented pedigree and the care that goes into a planned litter.

How long does registration take?
Processing times vary. Submit your paperwork soon after you bring your puppy home, and keep copies of everything you send.
